Germany's Seehofer: Not ECB's Job To Support States

The chairman of the sister party of Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling Christian Democrats Sunday expressed skepticism about the European Central Bank renewing purchases of the government bonds of weakened euro-zone members.

Speaking in an interview with Germany's ZDF television, Horst Seehofer, chairman of the Christian Social Union of Bavaria, said he was skeptical about such ideas and that it was not the job of the European Central Bank to provide state aid.

Last week, ECB President Mario Draghi made comments that strongly suggested the ECB could purchase Spanish government bonds in order to help lower the country's borrowing costs.

Mr. Seehofer's comments show the considerable differences of opinion in Germany over the role of the ECB in fighting the crisis. Ms. Merkel and her finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, issued separate statements after Mr. Draghi's comments, largely welcoming his proposal to buy bonds.
