LIMA, Peru--Peruvian President Ollanta Humala on Saturday highlighted some of his accomplishments during his first year in office, while recognizing that his administration has also committed a number of errors.
Mr. Humala's speech to Congress on Peru's Independence Day holiday did not contain any major surprises, as the president reaffirmed his commitment to maintain strong economic growth while lowering the percentage of the population living in poverty in the Andean nation to 15% by 2016. Through 2011, according to Peru government statistics, 28% of Peruvians were living in poverty.
Mr. Humala, a 50-year-old former military officer, became president last year for a five-year term. His election had initially raised concerns among investors that he would implement leftist policies that would hurt the business climate and slow economic growth. However since taking office, Mr. Humala has reassured investors and maintained the country's economic policies, while promoting better "social inclusion."
