Globally diversified miner Anglo American PLC (AAL.LN) is facing a fresh round of claims that poor working conditions at its South African subsidiaries have caused lung diseases in mine workers, the Independent on Sunday reported, citing a filing to the High Court.

Legal firm Hausfeld has lodged a High Court claim on behalf of 1,056 African gold miners who claim to be suffering from silicosis--a scarring of the lungs--as a result of poor health and safety conditions at the mines, the newspaper said. This adds to similar High Court claims by around 1,600 workers represented by London-based lawyer Leigh Day.

An Anglo American spokesperson told the Independent on Sunday the company only owned minority stakes in the companies involved, adding: "Anglo American does not believe that is in any way liable for the silicosis claims brought by former gold workers and is defending the actions."
